Work at Home Mom Series Part 2: Finding a Great Business Idea

If you are a stay at home mom looking for a great business idea or two to begin a work at home business then you have probably already heard about a million get rich quick ideas and become numb to the latest and greatest idea. Realistically there are no get rich quick businesses, all successful business require hard work and dedication.

If you are interested in self-employment out of your home then you should look to some common sense types of businesses. Think of chores, tasks or activities that you know others hate and that will afford you an opportunity to start a business that satisfies those tasks others just dread doing.

The list that you come up with will represent business opportunities that you could try. After you have made up the list, try to answer the following questions:

"Can this business be operated from home?
" Will there be a lot of startup capital to get it running?
" Will I need expensive permits or licenses?
" How much time will be required to be successful?
" Will this business pay the bills or is this a part-time opportunity?
" Can I acquire customers quickly?
" Is this a seasonal business?
" Will I need a lot of equipment?

When you have finished answering these questions, cross out any businesses that have too many barriers. Keep the businesses that have the least barriers to entry and begin to build upon them. Ask yourself some more questions:

" Who will be my customers?
" How much will I charge?
" Will there be repeat customers?
" How large is the market for this service?
" Do I need an attorney and accountant to help with the business setup?

When you have been able to satisfy these questions, you should have a trimmed down list of one or two businesses that are worth investigating further. At this time, you can visit your local library to conduct research. You may also surf the Internet for information, or purchase some books and magazines on the topic. Some people will go as far as to speak with potential customers about the business idea so that they can begin to understand whether the service is worthwhile or not. If they receive many positive responses then the business idea begins to grow.
