Leading home improvement experts predict one of this year's hottest trends will involve the great outdoors. Patios and decks, outdoor kitchens or living rooms, swimming pools, water features, pavers and walkways will be among the most important home additions for 2006.
The trend of backyard beautification is apparent at leading home improvement stores nationwide. Dominating spring outdoor collections are stainless-steel grills, a wide array of patio furniture, fountains and ponds, as well as the materials needed to build outdoor living areas. And you can't help but notice garden centers have expanded to include hundreds of feet of pavers, stepping stones, retaining wall blocks, concrete edging and outdoor lighting.
According to the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association, adding patios and paved walkways will be among this year's most popular projects. Patios are an affordable way to add outdoor living space with lots of function, while adding significant resale value. You can grill and entertain on them, sit down and read a book, or simply relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Paved walkways offer easy access to your new entertaining area.
Whether you're installing a patio or walkways yourself or calling in the professionals, there's a crucial step you must not overlook: sealing the concrete and/or pavers.
'Paver, concrete and brick manufacturers suggest sealing immediately to preserve the beauty of the materials being used, and to prevent stains from grease, mold, grass, dirt, and wear,' says Gordon Blickle of Gardner-Gibson, manufacturer of sealants for concrete and brick. 'If you don't take the time to seal a patio or walkways leading up to it, you could have damage pretty early on.'
To protect your investment for years to come, he recommends you apply an innovative new product, Krystal Brilliance Clear Paver and Walkway Sealer, to the surface as soon as it's installed. The sealant is a premium blend of water-based acrylic resins that renew and enhance the natural color and beauty of the surface, while providing superior protection against moisture and wear, and resistance to staining due to mold and mildew growth.
Krystal Brilliance isn't just for new concrete, bricks and pavers. It can also be used to protect existing stone, Chatahoochee/River Rock, garage floors, pool decks, driveways, sidewalks, roof tiles, patios, decorative stone and masonry surfaces.
'One final thought,' says Blickle. 'Sealers work best on a clean substrate, and even new pavers and concrete need to be cleaned. To avoid problems with sealers adhering well, we recommend you clean first with a product called Gardner Driveway Kleen.' |
